Continuing the theme from last...uh, month's post, allow me to flog yet another site for rpers. Following the link from Obsidian Portal, I discovered a place called Avatar Art. This is great stuff! They do a portrait of your character. (Yes, ok, that was obvious)
Going from Obsidian Portal (as a member, may be different if you're not) you get a $5 discount - which, incidentally, goes to Obsidian Portal - so you're funding 2 great rp resources at once. Anyway, Avatar has a wide variety of levels of detail for the portrait, depending on just how much you want - ok CAN - spend. You fill out their creation guide, send them the money (PayPal or check) and they get to it as quick as they can. They're kinda busy right now, after GenCon and so forth, but they still got cracking on mine. And they are GOOD.
Anyway, I heartily recommend them for those of us that can't draw worth a damn, but always wish we had a picture to show folks. Enjoy!

Um...hi
Ok, so I'm as bad at regular blogging as I am at regular correspondence. Since I'm doing a bunch of other rp-based/campaign type web stuff (all highly technical terms, those) I'll try to give this a bit more of a whirl.
Anyway, to any other junkies like me I will recommend a few places to visit. First off, Gnome Stew - they call themselves a blog for GMs, but I find a lot of interesting tidbits for players too, not to mention the helpful links to gaming tools.
Among those tools mentioned are 2 campaign hosting sites - EpicWords and Obsidian Portal. Both very good. More interesting if everyone - or at least a majority - in the campaign is interested in participating, but still...
Anyhoodles, just a line to let my non-existent fan base know I'm back.

Welcome
Hello, my name is DrPickett and I'm an RPaholic.
Hello, DrPickett!
Welcome. Consider this blog essentially a 12-step for RP addictions. These are the 12 steps:
1. Decide on a character concept; 2. Roll/buy stats; 3. Choose a race (if applicable); 4. Choose -
Ok, all of y'all who know what the rest of the steps are stand over here on the right. Those of y'all with the blank looks stand over here on the left.
On the right, we've got a large table and lots of pencils and paper. I'll assume y'all brought your own dice. I'll check in later.
Ok, for the ones looking scared, relax. Y'all aren't RPGamers, but we can help. Us RPaholics are a friendly bunch - mostly because we need more players... At any rate we never bite unless we're invited.
So, as the line at the top states, I'm addicted to roleplaying. D&D, Hero Systems, GURPS, Harn, this new-fangled d20 stuff... You name it, I've played it. I started in with D&D back when it was AD&D and I still have the books. Along with all the 3.0 and then 3.5 books, and the Harn books and the Hero books and the Lord of the Rings system and... If I see a new system or world or a new book in an old system or world, I buy it. Trust me, crack is cheaper.
(And just for the record, on the AD&D thing...yes, I'm that old. It was 1980 and I was {mumble} years old. )
As a further measure of my addiction, note the sign-in name. It took me 20 minutes to decide WHICH character (in 20 years of playing, sheesh) got the by-line. In the end, I chose this one - R. Pickett Davis, MD, late captain of the USArmy Medical Corps - because of what he represents. Anyone noting the name given can see that, strictly speaking, Dr. Pickett is not the appropriate appellation. However, another character from the same campaign was...shall we say...differently intel... No, face it, he was dumb. Dumber than dirt dumb. Dumb enough to make other people frustrated trying to ask him questions because he was dumb enough to answer EXACTLY what they asked. He started in with Dr. Pickett and continued on despite repeated statements to the effect of... "No, listen carefully, Herb. It's Dr. Davis, or it's Pickett. Either one is perfectly fine. But it's NOT Dr. Pickett. " "Ok, Dr. Pickett." *sigh*
Role-playing this scenario (over and over and...) was a joy. It's why I keep gaming, it's what attracts me to the whole thing. Interaction. I can (any RPaholic can) create an entirely new individual and have them live and breathe (metaphorically...for now) and carry on complete conversations - without scripting, without rehearsal, simply because for X many minutes, I AM that person. Which I, personally, find exciting. I am not, needless to say, a WWI veteran physician with scars and permanently disabling injuries. Nor, for that matter, am I either a doctor nor a man. Nor from Mississippi. Nor related to both George Pickett and Jefferson Davis. But for a few (or many, depending on your point of view) hours every week for something like 8 years, I was. Nor am I half orcish or elven (though I admit, I do have pointy ears...maybe Mom neglected to mention...) nor can I cast spells or disable traps - hell, I likely wouldn't even spot them. But for each gaming session, I can be.
So.... long boring role-playing rehash over. This blog is largely a place for me to ramble on about what I like about role-playing, what I look for, what I think makes for a good session or campaign. (Bearing in mind that I don't DM, I suck at it.) If y'all are in the group on the left, feel free to drop in and watch. We'll show y'all the ropes, no worries. If y'all are on the right, show me what we've got for a party. Did anyone think to roll a cleric?....
